Avatar Paragraph

I am Kay-Kay. I was created be Caeleigh Andrews. I was created to spread the news that in 2025, Caeleigh will have created a Time Machine. As you can see, it is on her paper above. There is a fridge, oven, and a mini-store attached. You can go into the future, past, or anywhere in the present. WARNING: this machine has not been completely tested. You cannot purchase it until we know it will not catch on fire. Discovering is fun and important!

PROBLEM:

How Do We Build a Catapult?

ASK:

What is Our Challenge?

The Angry Bird Competition is on … Angry Bird and Piggy Friends unite! To retrieve your stolen eggs, Angry Birds, your team will need to build a catapult with only the materials provided to you, as outlined in the following steps of this “Small Group Challenge: Marshmallow Catapults”:
Challenge: Each group will design and build a marshmallow catapult using the following materials: 1 meter of masking tape; 2 plastic cups; 4 rubber bands; 2 plastic spoons; 2 paper clips; 15 cm x 15 cm piece of cardboard; large (standard size) and small (mini size) marshmallows to launch.
Goal: Launch a marshmallow at least 5 meters (in the air) and not outside of a ½ meter width.

A catapult is a machine that was used to throw a heavy object using a great force. It was used in war before guns and cannons were invented. A catapult gets its energy by a human. The human must wind the winch. They also must load it, and release the rope. I think that when we make our catapults in the Discovery Center the base parts will be made toothpicks, popsicle sticks, pencils, and rubber bands. I am super exited and cannot wait to start this new project!

For our team’s solution, we made the Mangonel. The other solutions could have been the Ballista and Trebuchet. We used all of our ideas, but the base of our project was James’ idea. We chose ideas together because they made a good final product that (luckily) worked!

What are We going to do to address the Challenges We Faced with Our Construct?

For our catapult, the spoon had to be pulled back and then let go for the catapult to work. Sadly, our aim was a little poor…we had trouble getting the marshmallow to go where we wanted it. It would have been better if we had tightened the rubber bands some more and spun it around harder. But, our catapult did turn out very well, and I am excited to see the results!
